Clean Below, Good to Go: A New Partnership for Marine Biosecurity

The Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership is partnering with the Top of the North Marine Biosecurity Partnership to strengthen and streamline marine biosecurity messaging through the marine biosecurity awareness campaign, Clean Below, Good to Go.

This collaborative effort brings together councils from across the country:

  • The Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership includes Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough and Wellington councils, with support from Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation.
  • The Top of the North Marine Biosecurity Partnership includes Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay councils, with support from Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation.

The Clean Below, Good to Go campaign encourages boaties to clean their vessel hulls and gear before moving between locations: a key step in preventing the spread of marine pests.

Aligning communication efforts across both partnerships will deliver consistent, clear messaging nationwide. Whether a boat is travelling from Whangārei to the Marlborough Sounds, or Auckland to Abel Tasman National Park, the expectations remain the same: clean your vessel and gear before you go.

Joint communication efforts include:

  • Shared digital campaigns on social media and websites
  • Unified messaging in newsletters, social, and media releases
  • Educational outreach to boaties and marine users, ensuring consistent messaging.

This partnership reflects a strong, unified commitment to protecting Aotearoa New Zealand’s marine environments, from north to south.
