A year of growth and impact for marine biosecurity in the Top of the South
26 August 2025
The Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership has wrapped up another highly successful year in 2024/25. The year was marked by expanded surveillance, strengthened regional collaboration, and impactful public engagement.
This year, over 3,600 vessel hull inspections were completed across Marlborough, Tasman, Nelson, and Wellington. There were no new incursions of Mediterranean fanworm in Nelson for the second consecutive year - a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated response efforts. The inclusion of Greater Wellington Regional Council in the Partnership has extended biosecurity coverage and laid the groundwork for future regional initiatives.
Public awareness campaigns, including a summer collaboration with Clean Below Good To Go, reached over 300,000 people and reinforced key biosecurity messages. The Partnership continues to deepen engagement with Clean Below Good To Go (read more about this below) and support national initiatives, including Biosecurity New Zealand’s Protect Our Paradise.
Infrastructure upgrades like Nelson Marina’s new travel lift and enhanced wash bay, alongside the use of the Marine Vessel Portal, are boosting operational capability.
Looking ahead, the 2025/26 Operational Plan builds on these foundations, and includes an increased focus on community engagement with the intention to amplify on-the-ground presence, host more regional events, and build deeper relationships with local groups to support shared marine biosecurity goals.
With a clear roadmap for 2025/26, the Partnership looks to continue protecting the region’s marine ecosystems for the benefit of the wider environment and the enjoyment of generations to come.
