What motivates you to be involved in biosecurity?

I'm motivated by the variety and purpose that biosecurity work offers. Each day brings new challenges  - whether it's responding to an emerging pest threat or contributing to long-term projects that require persistence and collaboration. I find it incredibly rewarding to play a role in protecting our natural environment, supporting local communities, and safeguarding the primary industries that are vital to our region.

What has been your career path to your current position?

I graduated from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Trainee Ranger course in 2012, and since then I've worked in a range of conservation-based roles throughout the Top of the South. I joined Tasman District Council in 2022.

What are the main focuses of the work in Tasman? Are there any marine pests that are a particular problem/concern for TDC?

Our primary focus is the Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii). Like the rest of the Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership, we see this species as a serious threat due to its potential to significantly impact marine ecosystems, infrastructure, and aquaculture.

To manage this risk, we have a regular surveillance programme in place, which includes routine monitoring of marinas and a seasonal summer survey of vessels in Abel Tasman National Park.

What’s the most fun part of the job?

I enjoy meeting and connecting with people in our region. It’s a privilege to work in Golden Bay, home to a passionate and engaged community, as well as some stunning scenery!  Building relationships and collaborating with locals who care deeply about te taiao makes my job meaningful and enjoyable.

When you’re not working, where can we find you and what do you like doing?

We're pretty spoilt here in the Top of the South, and like most people in the region I love making the most of the outdoors. Whether it’s hunting, fishing, spearfishing, or mountain biking - I'm always up for an adventure. Lately, most of my free time is spent hanging out with our eight-month-old, and that’s just as exciting (and exhausting!) as any day in the hills.
